REPUBLICAN
MAC GIPSON TO SEEK RE-ELECTION AS
HOUSE DISTRICT 88 REPRESENTATIVE
Montgomery
- Rep. Mac Gipson (R - Prattville) on Friday announced
he will seek re-election as the State Representative
of House District 88 and will continue to focus
his legislative efforts on improving education
for Alabama's schoolchildren.
"The
citizens of District 88 know I have a record of
providing hard work and dedication in serving
their needs in Montgomery," Gipson said.
"I also recognize the problems and difficulties
often faced by families in my district, and that
is why I have fought to provide them tax relief
by creating a three-day state sales tax holiday
in Alabama."
Currently
serving his third term in the Alabama House, Gipson
has risen to prominence in the body by serving
as Ranking Minority Member on the powerful Education
Finance and Appropriations Committee, which allocates
more than $6 billion for all public schools, community
colleges and universities across the state.
He
also holds a seat on the House Education Committee
and serves as Ranking Minority Member of its Colleges
and Universities Subcommittee.
Gipson,
who owns three locations of Gipson's Auto Tire,
Inc. in Prattville and Millbrook, has worked throughout
the on-going regular legislative session to build
bi-partisan support for his legislation that would
create a once-a-year state sales tax holiday in
Alabama. The sales tax holiday, which would be
scheduled for the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday
in each August, is intended to make it easier
for families to purchase school clothes, school
supplies, computer electronics and other necessities.
Newspapers
across the state have editorialized favorably
on Gipson's legislation, and it was mentioned
prominently in Gov. Bob Riley's 2006 State of
the State Address.
The
lawmaker is a life-long resident of Autauga County
and is married to Mary Lee Hughes Gipson. They
have 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Gipson attended
Autauga County schools, graduated from Starke
Military School, is a veteran of the United States
Army and attended Troy State University in Montgomery.
The Gipson family attends First United Methodist
Church in Prattville. His hometown affiliations
also include American Legion Post 122, the Samaritan
Counseling Center Board, the Autauga Family Support
Center Board, and the Children's First Board.
He is a past President of the Prattville Area
Chamber of Commerce.
